Most counselors that work in drug and alcohol treatment programs have passed a certification examination to become a certified addictions counselor (CAC) and/or certified alcohol and drug counselor (CADC). Even though some training programs may be two years long for an associate degree, I believe that one may need a bachelor’s degree or even a master’s degree (such as in social work) to possibly get a job in the field. In addition to classroom lectures, the person will need extensive clinical experience in the field with an actual patient caseload under supervision before one is eligible to take the examination.
Here is the website for the Association for Addiction Professionals: http://www.naadac.org and can click ‘state affiliates’ as each state may have its own requirements.
Please make sure that the program is accredited within the industry. The aforementioned site should have accredited programs.
For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search ‘counselors’, ‘social workers’ or such.
With schooling, please also steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (may have ‘bricks and mortar’ buildings and may be ‘accredited’) such as penn foster, devry, ITT tech, capella, university of phoenix, kaplan, ashford, walden, argosy, sanford brown, everest, strayer, ashworth, remington, excelsior, colorado tech and others as they are merely out to ‘make a profit’ (and course credits may Not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.
